Otona-Sekai has shut down

In what’s probably the least surprising update to anyone even remotely familiar with the long-fumbling Japanese retailer, Otona-Sekai is no more.

Attempting to access their site will now either result in an instant ‘page cannot be displayed’ error or a weird Russian placeholder, so I maybe won’t be directly linking to them juuuust in case your PC gets injected with several litres of vodka.

Wow sexy.

But yes, Otona-Sekai had somehow found themselves in a perpetual state of circling the drain for literal years. It’s sorta amazing they lasted as long as they did.

Launching in 2016 as an adult spin-off of Nippon-Yasan (a once fairly popular place for importing anime figures and games), the site initially had a pretty promising outlook. They were stocking new onaholes the same day they launched and their prices were often better than anyone else.

Even as far back as 2018 though, copious amounts of shit was starting to hit the fan. I remember writing up a little warning article after a few people contacted me about their issues with the site. Lengthy processing times, customer support ghosting everyone – that sorta thing.

After which, Otona-Sekai mysteriously had a fire lit up their arse and seemed to get back into action… only to immediately start struggling again. New products just simply weren’t being stocked anymore, despite the site still technically being in operation until just recently.

I think their last big update was like… late 2019-ish?

Meanwhile their parent company Nippon-Yasan still appears to be fairly active on social media, but user reviews from the past year on Trust Pilot are looking absolutely dire with most customers having to fight for refunds due to orders not being shipped.

Here’s the Otona-Sekai and Nippon-Yasan warehouse in all its glory (at least according to the address they have publicly listed).

This closure follows the end of AkibaFarm last year – another onahole retailer which was run by an existing company who sold anime figures. I guess COVID hit the anime figure market pretty hard?!

Sad to see, but unfortunately completely expected in Otona-Sekai’s case.

  1. No surprise here, Otonasekai have been shit for ages. I placed an order with them last October and it took them over a month to ship, and when it arrived they “forgot’ to include three of the items in my order.
